    And arrived at the bank in due time and handed the note to the bank-manager. On reading it the latter knew that the letter had been written in very short time previously he then asked the messenger where he had put the horse he rode. The messenger replied that he did the journey on foot. The bank-manager was surprised on hearing this and advised him to go to the nearest hotel to get a little refreshment before he returned home. The refreshment consisted of a glass of brandy. The messenger set out on his homeward journey.
    When Orme was taking his afternoon walk through his fields he saw Luke Connor working with the other workmen and was very much astonished. Orme prepared to flog the servant thinking that he could not have done such a long journey in such a short time. Luke, perceiving what was about to happen gave the note he had received from the bank manager to Orme. The only reward Luke Connor got was
